SS2 didn’t start out as a sequel to the first game, but it turned out that way after EA suggested that the title be called System Shock. It was the Fall of 1999, and System Shock 2 invited us back into SHODAN’s grasp all over again. And after EA agreed to publish the title, the project that would emerge became the sequel that many believed not only matched the original System Shock for its immersive power but pushed well past it in several other ways. She was an omnipitent jerk who made you do her dirty work, only to (expectedly) attempt to kill you after defeating Xerxes and The Many.Īnd when she's on the ropes, begging for mercy, hearing "Nah" from Goggles-kun is immediately satisfying before her poorly-animated face is warped to digital oblivion.Five years would pass until Looking Glass Studios would tap Irrational Games on the shoulder with a proposal to work on something together. SHODAN was great at insulting you, controlling you and getting under your skin. "But OP! It was crap! Soldier Goggles just shot at a screen! The slow motion lifting of his gun at the sound of her NOOOOOO was dorky! The possession of the passenger due to a bite was too much of a stretch that nobody remembered in the audio logs!" To that, I agree. Yeah, sure, she gets away somehow by possessing the sole two survivors, but whatever.īut you all say. She rants about how mad she is that she lost to an insect, but offers to give you even more cybernetic enhancements. To summarize, you just beat the crap out of SHODAN. OBVIOUS System Shock 2 Spoilers System Shock 2, like Bioshock soon after, is a great game with a disappointing ending.
